Understand the 2026 Express Entry system, CRS ranking, category-based selection and how a provincial nomination can change your profile.

What is Express Entry?

Express Entry is IRCC's online system for managing applications under the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), Canadian Experience Class (CEC) and Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP). Eligible candidates create a profile, enter the pool and are ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).

1. Check eligibility

Confirm that you meet the minimum requirements of an Express Entry program.

2. Build your profile

Enter accurate age, education, language, work and family information.

3. Enter the pool

IRCC ranks eligible profiles by CRS score and applies the rules for each invitation round.

4. Receive an ITA

If invited, submit your permanent residence application within the applicable deadline.

2026 category-based selection

For 2026, IRCC announced renewed categories for French-language proficiency, health care and social services, education, STEM and trades. New categories include medical doctors with Canadian work experience, researchers with Canadian work experience, senior managers with Canadian work experience, transport occupations, and skilled military recruits with a job offer from the Canadian Armed Forces.

For the renewed categories, the minimum eligible work-experience requirement has been increased to one year in an eligible occupation, gained in Canada or abroad during the previous three years.

CRS: what actually gives you points?

  • Age, education, first and second official language results and Canadian work experience.
  • Spouse/common-law partner factors when applicable.
  • Skill-transferability combinations involving education, language and work experience.
  • Additional points for Canadian education, a provincial/territorial nomination, French proficiency and an eligible sibling in Canada.
  • Important 2026 rule: Express Entry no longer awards CRS points for job offers. Job offers can still matter for eligibility in some programs/PNP streams.
PNP impact: an Express Entry-linked provincial or territorial nomination adds 600 CRS points. It is one of the most significant ways to change a CRS profile.
